School Retention

I was recently informed that my daughter is going to be retained and repeat the second grade, due to the fact that she is not adapting sociably.

To make the best decision for my child I decided to look into the matter further to determine if this is best course of action for my child.

According to the clearinghouse on urban education there are no statistics kept nationally on retention. However, census data suggests that as many as one third of all school children are retained at least once by the time they enter High School. It also states that retaining a child at a young age can be harmful and risky and is not cost effective.

According to the California department of education a child can be retained with out the parents approval or permission, to make matters worse there are no state forms for notifying parents that their child is at risk of being retained.

I feel that it is not acceptable for anyone else to question if my child is capable. And I very much question how the school comes to that conclusion without parental input.
